About Althea Library

The present Althea Library bed and breakfast in Padstow was built by the Prideaux-Brune Estate in the 1800s. It was first used as the boys' school and later became the Sunday School, where the church parades congregated. They started their march from outside the Althea Library.

A Miss Dresser started "Althea Library" in a cottage across the road and, on her retirement, the library was put into a Trust and transferred to this building as the town library.

It ceased to be a library in the 1960s but retained its name. We bought Althea Library in 1995 from the Prideaux-Brune Estate and converted it to a family home. After the children left home, we decided to open it as a bed and breakfast.

Jane was born in Suffolk, but moved to Padstow when she was three years old, her father being born and bred in Padstow. Geoff was born in Sladesbridge, 7 miles up river from Padstow, and it has been recorded that one of his forefathers, at the age of 55, was the owner of a river barge there in 1626.

Despite not allowing guests' pets in the house, Geoff and Jane are animal lovers and support many animal charities.
